Bob Garrison always been moved by thoughtful travel writing, wherein someone with an eye for the inspiring (and the amusing) moments of their own adventures is able to capture their essence and describe them in a manner that truly connects with the reader, that speaks to them personally. He wanted to write about his own experiences in a similar way, one that he hopes will remind people of something positive in these darkly partisan times: “that we live in a great nation made up of 50 interesting and wonderful states that are home to genuinely good, decent people.” It is for this reason he now releases “Around the Map At Last: Stories of Travel to All 50 States of the U.S.A.” (published by iUniverse), a unique travel book inspired by his visits to each state in the nation.

Over the course of his lifetime, Garrison managed to visit every state and find something thoughtful or funny (sometimes both) to write about each one. The more he traveled, the more he realized that the message he wanted to share with America was a simple one: “our nation’s greatness lies in the wonderful diversity of its people, its geography and its history, and the myriad ways that they comprise what we and the world knows as the USA.” By writing about where he traveled, what he did and saw, and with whom he talked – and, uniquely, where he plans to go when he returns to each state – Garrison hopes to encourage everyone to remember “that if we can focus on the wonderful spirit of our nation, which is the product of our collective contributions, and not obsess over negative reasons for our differences, we can be reminded why we’re called the UNITED STATES of America.”

“As a nation, we’re tired and worn down, not only because of the COVID-19 pandemic but also because we’re exposed on a daily basis to a toxic political atmosphere that has so many of us questioning what is happening to us as a country. By describing unique people, places and experiences I’ve had in every state, I hope to remind all of us that we live in a great country and in our diversity lies our strength. Only in America, a United States of America, could I have had such experiences,” Garrison says.

When asked what he wants readers to take away from the book, Garrison answers, “That my lifetime of travel to every state in our nation has confirmed my unshakeable faith that we live in a great country, whose strength comes from each of us contributing in our own unique ways. We’re all ‘real Americans’.” For more details about the book, please visit
