Her team was blessed to be able to dodge the Covid-19 bullet to win the 2020 U Sports championship just in the nick of time before the national organization began cancelling other national championship events.
They were so fortunate.
That is the Baby Bronze-lining to this amazing story.
“Oh, my gosh, yeah, we talked about that as soon as we got back,” recalled Thomaidis, whose program remains in indefinite limbo while coaches, athletes and officials wait out the COVID-19 pandemic threat.
“Three days later, I think, is when they cancelled hockey and everything else. We were just reminiscing, like, ‘holy cow, how grateful we are that we got a chance to compete for a national championship.’ Again, it just shows you how quickly the situation was changing at the time because, that weekend when we were in Ottawa, there wasn’t anybody really talking about the virus and taking any precautions. It was just business as usual and then, boom, 3-4 days later, we really pivoted 180 degrees.
