Austin Sister Cities International Hosts Virtual Mayoral Holiday Reception

Austin Sister Cities International Hosted City of Austin Mayor Steve Adler and City Council Members at a Virtual Holiday Reception on Dec. 9, 2020, to celebrate Austin’s cultural diversity.

The event showcased a real-life instance of ASCI’s mission of promoting diplomacy through culture, education and economic development.

The evening’s highlights included an understanding of global culinary etiquette, catering by family-owned restaurants specializing in Nigerian, Japanese, Indian, Turkish, German & Mexican cuisines, stories shared about events and programs where the exchange of cultural understanding strengthened ties between cities internationally and the promise to strive harder to build bridges and global understanding of citizen diplomacy.

Austin Mayor Steve Adler and his wife Diane Land were the guests of honor along with city council members Alison Alter, Jimmy Flannigan, Sabino ‘Pio’ Renteria, Page Ellis, Natasha Harper-Madison, Leslie Pool. Representatives of the Economic Development Department attended the event as well.

ASCI Co-Chair Kristie Bryant commented, “For decades, ASCI has promoted the understanding and value of citizen diplomacy through its Sister Cities network by organizing programs supporting economic, educational and cross-cultural exchange. The pandemic only strengthened our resolve to promote citizen diplomacy with digitized programming.”
